Welsh road freight falls 9% as outbound UK loads increase
New Welsh Government figures show UK-registered HGVs lifted 99.4 million tonnes of goods in Wales in 2025, down 9% from 2024. Loads travelling from Wales to the rest of the UK increased.
The release, published on 15 October, reports 45.0 million tonnes carried within Wales, down 22%, and 27.7 million tonnes entering from the rest of the UK, down 1%. Outbound goods to the rest of the UK rose 13% to 26.7 million tonnes.
Mixed consignments, classified as grouped goods, represented 18% of goods lifted; food products accounted for 14%. These are freight-weight measures, not pallet volumes, and provide context for hauliers and pallet networks serving Welsh customers.
The release mixes reporting periods: its Wales–EU figures still cover 2024 because the 2025 international statistics have been delayed. Chart: Welsh Government, based on Department for Transport data, reused under the Open Government Licence.
