CHEP-led Italian transport collaboration reports 80% fewer empty kilometres

CHEP says matching Coop and Fiorentini deliveries between Tuscany and Piedmont has reduced average empty travel from 100km to 20km per articulated vehicle. FERCAM handles both legs of the round trip.
CHEP Italia has reported results from a collaborative transport project with Coop Italia, Fiorentini Alimentari and logistics operator FERCAM. CHEP analysed distribution flows and identified complementary journeys between Tuscany and Piedmont.
Coop own-label goods travel from its Prato distribution centre to stores around Turin. The return flow carries Fiorentini snacks and rice cakes from Trofarello to grocery distribution centres around Florence. FERCAM operates both legs, with stable volumes supporting fuller vehicle use.
According to CHEP, average empty distance fell from 100km to 20km per articulated vehicle, an 80% reduction. This is a company-reported operational result, not an independently audited emissions saving. FERCAM also uses HVO fuel; the article does not establish a measured combined carbon saving for this project.
