DfT reports lower average delay on England’s strategic road network

DfT estimates average delay on England’s strategic road network at 10.8 seconds per vehicle-mile in the year to June 2026, down 6.9% year on year; average speed rose to 56.7 mph. The release warns that local A-road figures are affected by a change in the vehicle sample.
The Department for Transport published its accredited travel-time statistics on 30 September 2026. For the year ending June 2026, it estimates average delay on England’s Strategic Road Network at 10.8 seconds per vehicle per mile compared with free-flow conditions, down from 11.6 seconds a year earlier; average speed was 56.7 mph, up from 56.1 mph. Across locally managed A roads in Great Britain, the estimated average was 43.4 seconds of delay per vehicle-mile and 24.5 mph. DfT cautions that a change in the underlying vehicle sample from April 2025 makes local A-road figures unsuitable for longer-term comparison; it also says SRN data publication will pause while National Highways undertakes development work. These are averages across vehicles, not HGV-specific journey times or live traffic conditions.
