Pennsylvania backs $837 million PhilaPort expansion programme

Pennsylvania has announced $371.5 million in capital funding for PhilaPort, intended to unlock a wider port expansion programme worth more than $837 million with federal and private investment.
The 13 October announcement sets out funding for Southport dredging and reclamation, land acquisition, cranes and other equipment. Planned works include a new 2,000-foot berth at Southport Marine Terminal and improvements at Tioga Marine Terminal for breakbulk vessels and liquid bulk barges.
PhilaPort says the programme combines state capital with more than $200 million of private investment and $266 million of federal funding. Officials project a 122% increase in container capacity and an 18% increase in vehicle capacity across port facilities.
Those figures describe planned capacity, not cargo already handled or completed construction. The programme matters to importers, exporters, freight forwarders and palletised-goods supply chains using the Philadelphia gateway.
