New DfT estimates for 2025 put work-related road collisions at 37% of reported injury collisions, with 583 deaths and 9,804 killed or seriously injured in collisions involving at least one work-travelling driver. The department labels the new estimates “official statistics in development” while its modelling approach is assessed.
The Department for Transport updated its estimates for road casualties involving driving for work on 24 September. For 2025, it estimates 37,456 reported injury collisions (37% of the total) involved at least one vehicle travelling for work; 583 people were killed and 9,804 were killed or seriously injured in collisions involving at least one work-travelling driver. Important qualification: DfT publishes this new method as official statistics in development, subject to further quality assurance and feedback. Its methodology assumes HGVs, buses, agricultural vehicles and trams were travelling for work regardless of recorded journey purpose.
