Bed spring manufacturer fined £80,000 after pallet-truck collision

HSE says temporary route changes during machinery installation were not properly assessed before a ride-on pallet truck and forklift collided at a Barnsley warehouse.
Leggett & Platt Components Europe Limited has been fined £80,000 after a worker suffered foot fractures and longer-term nerve damage in a warehouse collision, HSE reported on 23 October.
The incident happened at the company’s Long Royd warehouse in Barnsley on 14 November 2024. A ride-on pallet truck collided with a forklift while new automated machinery was being installed.
HSE found that altered routes required both vehicle types to share a busy loading area with restricted visibility and increased movements. The company had not properly assessed the risks before introducing those changes.
The manufacturer pleaded guilty to breaching section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. Leeds Magistrates’ Court imposed the fine and £3,374 costs on 20 October 2026. The case underlines the need to assess temporary traffic arrangements before installation work begins.
